Summer is officially here and the heat is on! Before I jump to upcoming activities, I want to take a moment and thank all those who attended the Friends Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Dinner on June 15. Without our volunteers, who reported nearly 4000 hours of service this year, we could not have raised over $60,000 this year at the Wine & Cuisine Tasting, Art Fair and Best Used Book Sales. This money funds programs and services provided for all to utilize at the Sierra Madre Public Library.
I want to recognize and say thank you to the dinner committee: Darlene Traxler, Sharon Murphy, Beth Smith-Kellock, Fran Garbaccio, Connie Wortham, Toni Navarro and Jane Zamanzadeh. The food was fabulous and the hall was so festive with a sports theme complementing the Library’s “Read for the Win!” summer reading program. Thank you to all who brought food and beverages and to those who helped clean up after the program. Many hands made for light work!
Welcome to new Board Members Julie Brady, Tom Brady, Beth Kerns, Doug Kerns and welcome back to Alan Leahy, we look forward to getting to know you and involving you in the Friends.
We also had the opportunity to meet Ryan Baker, the new Library and Community Services Director. Welcome to Sierra Madre – we are here to help and support you and know that you will love and treasure the Library and community as we all do. Toni Buckner, thank you for your service as Interim Library Director this past year. It was an honor to work with you.
Upcoming Activities – be sure to see the schedule of upcoming events for the Summer Reading Program, as well as the One Book One City events planned around Bernard Malamud’s The Natural including a trip to tour Dodger Stadium.
The Friends remain busy this summer as well. Join the Friends and Kiwanis Club Sunday, July 31 in Memorial Park as we co-sponsor The Gem City Jazz Cats. The following weekend, August 5 and 6, is the next Best Used Book Sale in the Library basement and parking lot.
We are still seeking people to chair/co-chair the 2017 Wine & Cuisine Tasting Benefit and the 2017 Sierra Madre Art Fair. If interested, please contact any Board member.
Have a safe summer – I hope to see you around town!
